Creating amazing drum tracks in ACID software: Q&A

Creating amazing drum tracks in ACID software: Q&A

  1. How do I set the loops to the project tempo and use a metronome to make sure that everything is set correctly to the project tempo?
  2. Can you record the sounds of the drum kit instead of the MIDI?
  3. Could you solo the modified track to better hear how it sounds and then un-solo it to play it with the full mix?
  4. Will a new version of ACID Pro or Music Studio have the option to view MIDI files as sheet music (notation music)?
  5. How do you output the drum synth to multiple outputs?
  6. I'm in the middle of a project using ACID Music Studio 7. If I upgrade to ACID Music Studio 8 will that mess up my mixes?
  7. How do you edit each track when they contain various types of notes? For example one track plays 8th notes but another track plays 16th notes.
  8. Are there any plans to make it possible to nest an ACID project into the timeline of my Vegas Pro project without the need to render? This would be similar to the way one can currently nest one Vegas Pro project into the timeline of another Vegas Pro project.
  9. Can you revoice the MIDI drum track, as you can with other MIDI tracks?
  10. I already have Acid Music Studio 8.0. Is there any promotion available just for the EZ drummer?
  11. Thanks for the webinar. Are there more to come?

How do I set the loops to the project tempo and use a metronome to make sure that everything is set correctly to the project tempo?

This question was addressed in the Q&A session at the end of the webinar. The short answer is that ACID software does the tempo matching for you automatically. You specify a project tempo and any loop you add to your project conforms to that tempo. The same is true for pitch. You set your project pitch (or key) and ACID software matches the loops you add to that key. This is the basic magic of ACID software’s loop creation tools.

Can you record the sounds of the drum kit instead of the MIDI?

On the Roland drum kit that we used during the webinar, yes. The synthesizer module for that kit has (in addition to the MIDI output that we recorded during the presentation) individual audio outputs for each MIDI trigger. You can connect those outputs to your computer’s audio interface and route them to individual tracks in ACID software to record the audio they output. Other MIDI enabled drum kits may not offer this feature, so if it’s important to you to do this, make sure to verify this function before you buy a kit! This question was also addressed in the Q&A session at the end of the webinar.

Could you solo the modified track to better hear how it sounds and then un-solo it to play it with the full mix?

Yes. Each track and every bus in ACID software features a Solo and Mute button, so you can solo or mute the output of any of these elements. This question was addressed in the Q&A session at the end of the webinar.

Will a new version of ACID Pro or Music Studio have the option to view MIDI files as sheet music (notation music)?

We have made no announcement regarding future versions of either application. However, this is a great feature request and we have logged it as such with our development team.

How do you output the drum synth to multiple outputs?

Right-click the channel icon for the Synth bus in the Mixing Console window and choose Insert/Remove [Synth name here] | Insert All Soft Synth Sub Buses. Keep in mind that the soft synth that you’re using must support this function (the EZDrummer synth does) and that this feature is only available in ACID Pro and not ACID Music Studio.

I'm in the middle of a project using ACID Music Studio 7. If I upgrade to ACID Music Studio 8 will that mess up my mixes?

It’s always a good idea to backup your project files when upgrading any software. That said, your projects will translate perfectly from ACID Music Studio 7 to version 8 or even to ACID Pro 7. You can also install the two side by side on the same machine if you want them both for some reason. They will run simultaneously without any problem.

How do you edit each track when they contain various types of notes? For example one track plays 8th notes but another track plays 16th notes.

Each track in your project is completely independent of the others. You can change every track however you want to, so (for example) the 8th notes on one track have no bearing on the 16th notes on another.

Are there any plans to make it possible to nest an ACID project into the timeline of my Vegas Pro project without the need to render? This would be similar to the way one can currently nest one Vegas Pro project into the timeline of another Vegas Pro project.

We have made no announcements about the features of future versions of either of these products. However, this is a great feature suggestion and we have logged it with our development team.

Can you revoice the MIDI drum track, as you can with other MIDI tracks?

Yes; it works exactly the same was as any other MIDI track. To change the voice of a soft-synth that your MIDI track is already assigned to, select the track and then select View | Soft Synth Properties. In the Soft Synth Properties window, use the soft synth’s controls to make changes to the parameters. You see the instructor do exactly that during the webinar as he switches between the various kit types and drum sounds. You can also assign a different soft synth to an existing MIDI track. To do this, click the track’s MIDI Output button. Select an available soft synth from the context menu. If you haven’t yet inserted another soft synth, choose Insert Soft Synth from the menu to open the Soft Synth Chooser dialog box. From the list of available soft synths, click the soft synth you want to insert and click OK. Finally, you can also route the MIDI data to external synthesizer hardware. To do this, click the MIDI Output button and select your external MIDI device from the list.

I already have Acid Music Studio 8.0. Is there any promotion available just for the EZ drummer?

EZdrummer is available as a separate purchase in the Sony Creative Software store, however through December 31, 2010 the Dynamic Duo (ACID Music Studio + EZdrummer bundle) is the best deal for EZdrummer even if you already own ACID Music Studio software.

Thanks for the webinar. Are there more to come?

Definitely! We are currently on a schedule of one webinar per month. We have also made all of our previous webinars available for on-demand playback. You can find them under the Webinars section in the training zone at www.sonycreativesoftware.com/training.
