Charles Dennis
As one of the founders of P.S. 122, the legendary New York performance space, Charles Dennis has already made a lasting mark on dance and culture in America. Since 1979, P.S. 122 has provided a home for new works by emerging, and sometimes controversial, dancers and performance artists. An acclaimed choreographer and performer in his own right, Charles has been interested in the interplay between dance and visual media since the 1980s.

Charles Dennis
Charles began filming the dynamic dance and performance art scene in New York in 1993, creating the ongoing series Alive and Kicking, which highlights dancers and performance artists who are pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance. Charles started filming the Alive and Kicking programs on a Sony® Hi8™ Handycam® camcorder. He has made the jump to digital video and completed work on a documentary film, Homecoming Celebrating 20 Years of Dance at P.S. 122 with the help of Vegas editing software.
"Vegas software redefines the editing environment," says Charles. "Its interface lets you edit right on the timeline. Vegas software lets you work fast!"
"I used Vegas software to complete my full length documentary film, Homecoming Celebrating 20 Years of Dance at P.S. 122,"
Charles explains. "I actually began editing the film using Edit DV/Cinestream but quickly converted to Vegas. It speeded up my workflow and the film was completed with a higher level of professionalism. And its audio features gave the film a sonic polish that was a big factor in its success. Now I use it for all my video editing projects-short documentaries and multicam shoots and even moving into HDV content production."
Charles Dennis has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the UCLA National Dance Media award and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art. His 2000 solo piece, "Mr. Remote," premiered at P.S. 122 and toured America to widespread acclaim. He continues to develop programs for the Alive and Kicking series, as well as preparing a new dance/performance/video work entitled "Compass" to debut in 2006.
