    How-to

How can I create a watermark?

To create a watermark, you could mask the letters or symbols of your logo and make the background transparent. Depending on the nature of your logo, you could alternatively use the Chroma Keyer to remove the background. (Review the sections of the webinar which demonstrate masking the word “It” and using the Chromakey filter to knock out the water in the background of the scene with the man sitting by the lake.) Put the logo on a dedicated track by itself and then use the track motion tools (also demonstrated in the webinar) to place the artwork exactly where you want it in the video frame. Finally, use the track’s Level slider to adjust the logo’s transparency if you don’t want it to be fully opaque.

How do I mask out the mouth of a still image and replace it with a moving mouth?

You could do this a couple of different ways. Here’s one idea that works. Place the still image on the video track above the video with the moving mouth. Click the Video FX tab and select Cookie Cutter from the list of video effects. Drag the preset Circle Cut Out, Center, Blurred and drop it onto the top track which holds your still image. In the Video Event FX window, adjust the parameters of the cutout, such as the size and amount of feather. Click the Center drop-down arrow and adjust the position of the mask. Now use the Track Motion tools on the bottom track (the one that holds the video) to position the moving mouth in the video so that it corresponds to the mask you’ve created on the still image, thus enabling it to show through the hole you’ve created in the still image.

How can I successfully add time to my project (inserted at a certain point) and have all my track motion keyframes remain in their proper place along my events?

This happens automatically in the default configuration of Vegas Pro. If your track motion keyframes don’t move along with their corresponding events, you have likely changed this behavior from the Vegas Pro default. To reestablish this behavior, click the Lock Envelopes to Events.

Can I create a shadow with the track motion controls when I’ve set my track compositing mode to 3D Source Alpha?

No. The track motion window does not offer a shadow option when 3D Source Alpha is selected.

How do I add perspective to a video?

I’m not sure I understand exactly what you’re trying to accomplish. If you’re looking to add depth to a picture-in-picture effect, you could experiment with the 2D shadow feature in the track motion window. You can also use the 3D Source Alpha compositing mode to adjust a track’s output in three dimensional planes. If you’ve shot stereoscopic 3D footage, you can use the robust stereoscopic 3D editing tools in Vegas Pro to adjust the video’s 3D effect.

How does this compositing relate to video effects? Can you show an example of where you would use the Add and Subtract features with video?

Try the following example: add footage shot in front of a green screen to the timeline. On the track above your video event, add the Green preset from the Solid Color Media Generator. Set the compositing mode to Subtract on the track with the solid color event. You’ll see how the green background color is subtracted from the video. Of course, you could use the Chroma Keyer plug-in for this purpose; this is just an example to illustrate how the Subtract feature works. The best way to learn how the various compositing modes work with video footage is to experiment and see what you can come up with. The application help file includes technical descriptions on exactly what each mode does, but you’ll likely never really know how it will affect any individual video clip unless you try it.

Can I apply a mask or composting to make letters in media generators appear 3D?

You probably can’t although you might be able to come up with something (after a lot of experimentation) that might get you close to what you want. However, the NewBlue Titler Pro media generator (included free of charge with your purchase of Vegas Pro) is a great tool for creating 3D text. For more tips on using this plug-in, view the Creating 3D text with NewBlue Titler Pro webinar in the Sony Creative Software website training section at www.sonycreativesoftware.com/training.

How do I sync the motion and audio in all clips?

An article that provides some helpful tips for matching audio to video is available in the Training section of our website under Articles at www.sonycreativesoftware.com/training. Look for the article titled Sony Vegas: Matching Video to Audio.

Regarding your compositing example using the "Lake" text with the image of the lake appearing through the text, how could you zoom in through the text, so the text disappears into your lake footage?

With the Event Pan/ Crop tool on the text event, create a second keyframe on the Position track and resize the position box (make it smaller), so it contains just the white from one of the letters in your text. When you play back the project, you’ll see the zooming effect on the text, ending with the view of the lake.

How can I use the other track level compositing modes like Hard Light, Overlay, Dodge, Burn, and the like?

For more information on the compositing modes we did not have time to cover in the webinar, choose Help | Content and Index and search for the phrase “Compositing and Masks.” This will give you a technical description of what each mode does, but in reality the only way to know for sure how each mode will affect your video is to experiment.

In the example with Devil’s Lake, could you feather the words to avoid pixilation?

I’m not really sure what you’re asking. If you follow the procedures in that demonstration, you shouldn’t see pixilation. Any pixilation you may see during the webinar is probably caused by a combination of the Vegas Pro preview quality setting and the encoding that the webinar broadcasting software performs in order to stream the presentation.

How do I set a mask within a mask, for example a donut where we want the ring and not the hole?

There may be several ways to accomplish this, but here’s the easiest one I can think of. Add your video to your project and then add a text generator to the track just above the video. For the text, type just a single “O.” Choose a font that gives you the shape you want for your donut. Make the O black and the text generator’s background white. Now add the Mask Generator filter to the text event. This masks out the black O and you see the track below it show through. If you can’t get the shape you want with a text generator, then use your image editing software to create a black and white mask in the shape you want.

    Beziér Masking

Is there any possibility to allow only paths which are either horizontal or vertical with the Beziér masking tool?

Not exactly while you’re placing new anchor points, but you can always use the Position settings in the Properties area to make sure that your X (for horizontal alignment) or Y (for vertical alignment) match for consecutive anchor points.

Can I define the Beziér path by typing the numeric values of the positions of the points instead of clicking with the mouse?

nce you have created a point, you can enter numeric values for X and Y to adjust its position, but you must first use the Anchor Creation tool to place each new point

Is it possible to import Beziér curves into Sony Vegas Pro, from an SVG file, for example?

Vegas Pro does not currently support the import of Bezier curves from a file.

How can I do motion masking?

As demonstrated in the webinar, you can create keyframes in the Mask timeline in the Event Pan/ Crop window and adjust the anchor points of your mask to follow motion in the video clip.

Is there a way to do automatic motion tracking?

Vegas Pro does not include an automatic motion tracker, however you could look into third-party plug-ins as a solution. Boris FX, for example, offers a motion tracker for Sony Vegas Pro, and you can download a free trial from their website.

How could I create a perfect circle with the masking tools?

easiest way to create a perfect circle mask is to use the Cookie Cutter filter. There is currently no automatic way to create a perfect shape with the Beziér making tools.

Can I adjust saturation as well as brightness as in your Beziér demo with the person on the lake under the tree?

Yes, you can use various Video FX with the same masking technique that was demonstrated in the webinar.

How can I select multiple Beziér points at once?

If the points form an enclosed shape, select the Normal Edit Tool, hold the Alt key, and click the mask.

    Chroma Keyer

How can I input RGB values (range from 0 to 255) in the new color picker?

The new color pickers use the HSV color model by default. To use the RGB model, click the Color Model drop-down list and choose RGB from the list. Then, enter the RGB recipe for the color you want in the color field. The color field uses percentages, so if you want the full value of a color, enter 1.0 into the field. If you want half the full value of a color, enter 0.50 into the field. Or select the color from the color chart.

Can I make a drop shadow for a chroma keyed shape?

Click the Track Motion button for the track that contains the keyed video. Select the 2D Shadow checkbox and adjust the shadow’s position box to place the shadow where you want it.

How can I sample a color to see its mathematical RGB value?

Click the Colors drop-down arrow, then click the Eyedropper button. Then click anywhere on your screen to sample the color at that location, or draw a rectangle around multiple colors to get an average value. The RGB values automatically update.

Digital Video and Audio Production Guide

I am new to Sony Vegas Pro. What would be a good book to use as a beginner?

The Digital Video and Audio Production guide is the best place to start. It offers comprehensive beginner to intermediate training for Vegas Pro. This is also the book we use as a study guide for the first level certification (Sony Certified Vegas User) exam.

The cutoff for free upgrades to a new version is 30 days prior to the new release. For more information, search for the article Qualifications for free upgrades in our Knowledgebase at www.custcenter.com.

In your opinion, how valuable is the Sony Certified Vegas User (SVCU) certification? Is Vegas Pro an industry standard in broadcast and movies, as opposed to other editing programs?

The SVCU certification is a great way to boost your qualifications whether you’re working in the broadcasting industry, creating wedding videos, or using Vegas Pro in any type of professional setting. Preparing for the SVCU exam gives you the opportunity to get to know the ins and outs of the software, and the certification adds to your professional recognition. This certification is also the first step to earning the higher-level Sony Certified Vegas Editor certification. The number of certified users is constantly growing and holding these certifications distinguishes you from other editors who do not hold certification.
